Episode in Time Assessments

Prior to Admission*

Pre-Placement Assessment (based on written records and any pre-placement visits). Usually undertaken by Registered Manager with Psychology Input as Appropriate.

Initial Assessment Period*

Initial Behaviour Support

Plan/Response Plans Established

Staff to Commence Behavioural Recordings (STAR charts)

Psychological Assessments with Child/Young Person to include:

  • Self-Esteem / Self-Concept
  • Locus of Control
  • Secure Base
  • Depression
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Disruptive Behaviour
  • Young People Questionnaires
  • Self-harm (if appropriate)
  • Drinking Motives (if appropriate)
  • Drug Motives (if appropriate)

[Each of the Above Tests Requires Less than 15 Minutes Formal Interview]

  • Challenging Behaviour Checklist

From 6 Week Assessment*


Initial Behaviour Support Plan/Response Plans Evaluated

Recommendation of type of placement required to meet Child/Young Person’s needs

  • Analysis of Behaviours from Star Charts

Assessment / Interview to carry out with staff:

  • Challenging Behaviour Checklist

All or some of the following additional Psychological Assessments that may be used dependent on recommendations from initial assessment and staff observations:

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (measure of functional ability and cognitive profile)
  • Mental Health – KONORS and CH PAS-ADD
  • Personality / Conduct – SKID
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Interview
  • Autism – Sensory Profile, Empathy Checklist, CARS
  • Aspergers – OASIS
  • Psychosexual Assessment
  • QASCO – Assessment re: sexual offending

From 13 Week Assessment


Behaviour Support Plan/Response

Plans Evaluated for use in Foster Placement

  • Analysis of Behaviours from Star charts

Assessment / Interview to carry out with staff:

  • Challenging Behaviour Checklist

Psychological Assessments Child/Young Person to include:

  • Self-Esteem / Self-Concept

From 26 Week Assessment

  • Disruptive Behaviour
  • Young People Questionnaires
  • Self-harm (if appropriate)
  • Drinking Motives (if appropriate)
  • Drug Motives (if appropriate)
