Who's Who - Key Staff
Steve Miller was the founding director of the Marlowe Child & Family Services back in 1991. His previous professional experience includes working with children and young people in the Health Service and Voluntary Sector, where he worked as a Manager and Therapist. He has been a National Committee Member for the Eating Disorders Association, and APSA (Association of Professionals in Services for Adolescents) and the Independent Children's Homes Association. He has taught extensively at several universities.
Maurice qualified as an accountant in 1971. Prior to joining Marlowe Child & Family Services in 2001, he had spent most of his career in industry, including 20 years in the motor trade. He is expert in systems, and strategic and financial planning. Maurice manages the Administration and Finance Department. He is responsible for contracts and business development. He sits on the Board of Directors.
Richard joined Marlowe (St David's) in 1996 as a Residential Social Worker, having previously worked as a Youth Worker. He has an NVQ Level IV in Health & Social Care (Children & Young People) and ILM Management Level IV. In addition he has a HND in Business & Finance and an HNC in Community Care. Richard has worked at all levels at St David's. In 2001 he took his first Unit Manager's position in charge of a four bedded home for younger adolescents. In 2005 he became Education Manager and Deputy Care Services Manager, being promoted to his current position in April 2006.
After leaving Manchester Metropolitan University Rob began his teaching career working at a Behaviour Support Unit in a school in North Wales, before moving to a special school in Shropshire. From 2007 to 2009 he worked as a Senior Consultant advising schools across the UK in behaviour management strategies, in order to improve learning outcomes with the most challenging pupils. He joined Marlowe Education Unit as Education in 2009. Rob has extensive training in special needs and managing challenging behaviours. He is currently studying for a Degree in Applied Psychology.
In the 1960's Gronwy qualified as a teacher from Keele, taught in Kent and then took a graduate assistantship at the University of North Carolina. On returning to the UK he completed his M.Ed. and then took up a post as Head of PE at a deprived East-End school. Whilst there he completed a B.Sc. in Psychology and an M.Sc. at London Institute of Education in ‘The Psychology of Education’. Gronwy then spent several years teaching trainee teachers Psychology, Counselling, and the effects of personality on learning. He completed his own studies with a Ph.D. in 1986 and from then until 2001 he was on an ESRC Teaching Fellowship at Wolverhampton University. Since 2001 he has been working at St David's Education Unit. During this period he has used his significant experience and knowledge to develop a first-class school for St David's ASC.
Tonia joined Marlowe when it first opened in 1992. During the intervening years she has worked as a Residential Care Worker, Teaching Assistant and Care Manager. She worked for several years at Althea Park House (at the time part of Marlowe Child & Family Services) with young women with eating disorders. She completed her NVQ 3 in Caring for Children and Young People in 2001, her NVQ 4 in Care in 2003 and her NVQ 4 in Management in early 2005. She is an NVQ assessor. She also undertakes training for Marlowe on Child Protection and Dealing with Bullying Behaviour, as well as being a qualified trainer for CPI crisis intervention.
Ian joined Marlowe Child & Family Services in 2000, after a career in the Armed Forces. He completed his NVQ 3 and his NVQ Assessors Course in 2001, and his Internal Verifiers Course in 2007. He completed his NVQ Level 4 in 2005 and NVQ Level 5 in 2008. He has been the Registered Manager at Eastnor House since it opened in 2004, and has been the driving force behind its success, consistently receiving very positive Inspection Reports and positive outcomes for children with highly special needs. He is also a qualified trainer for CPI crisis intervention.
On leaving school Tanya completed a GNVQ in Health & Social Care before going on to obtain a 1st Class Honours Degree in Psychology from Staffordshire University in 2000. She joined Marlowe in 2002 and has subsequently acquired her NVQ 4 in Care and Management, as well as NVQ Assessors Award. Tanya has a special interest in Pervasive Development Disorders and has undertaken significant postgraduate training in this area. Similarly, along with her staff, she has been developing a high level of skill and understanding in managing deliberate Self-Injury. She has been a Unit Manager since 2005, developing ‘The Haven's’ innovative approach. In 2009 she obtained 'Outstanding' in 4 out of 5 areas in ‘The Haven's’ OfSTED report.
Lesley joined Marlowe Child & Family Services in early 2008, having previously worked in the NHS and subsequently as a Registered Manager for both Sedgemoor and Priory Solutions. Lesley has an NVQ 4 in Care and an NVQ 5 in Care Management. She is also an NVQ Internal Verifier. At present she is undertaking counselling training. Lesley is particularly interested in staff training and development, as well as working with children and young people with challenging behaviour and autistic spectrum disorders.
Kerry joined Marlowe Child & Family Services in early 2003, originally as a Therapeutic Care Worker, but being promoted to a senior position in 2004. Having obtained her NVQ 3, in 2007 she was seconded by Marlowe to study for her Diploma in Social Work/BA (Hons) with the Open University, successfully completing it early 2009. Also in 2009 she completed her Registered Managers Award and her NVQ A1 Assessors Award. Kerry has a wide spectrum of experience in working with challenging children and young people, particularly those with attachment disorders.
Sue came to her current career after bringing up her own family and working in finance and business administration. She joined Marlowe (St David's) in 1997 and was promoted to a Team Leader in 2000. In 2001 she became a Unit Manager. Alongside her career she has pursued extensive training and personal development, completing a NVQ III in 1999 and an HNC in Community Care in 2000. In 2006 she obtained a BA in Social Work from Robert Gordon University. She completes IML Level IV in Management in 2007. Sue also facilitates in-house at Marlowe (St. David's) including delivering value-base training and healthy lifestyles. Sue is particularly interested in promoting positive outcomes for children with learning disabilities.
Jenny left school in 1989 with an ambition to work in the Care Sector. She initially completed an NVQ Level III in Social Care at Oswestry College in Shropshire, before going on to complete NVQ Level IV in Care and ILM Management. She joined the team at Marlowe (St David's) in 1998. She became Unit Manager of Oaklands in 2003. Jenny's particular interests include Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disabilities and working with sexually vulnerable young women.
Prior to beginning his career in working with children Shane gained valuable management experience in the Hotel and Tourism Sector. After joining Marlowe (St. David's) he worked as a Care Worker and Senior Care before being promoted to Unit Manager of ‘Upper House’. Shane left Marlowe (St. David's) following restructuring and reorganisation to work as a manager at ‘Tracs’, in a residential unit for clients with severe autism. Shane also worked at Impact Youth Services as a manager before rejoining Marlowe (St. David's) and taking up the manager's position at Walton Lodge in 2007. He also completed his NVQ4 in Care and Management in late 2007.
Sharon is currently the Registered Manager of Upper House, as well as managing Safe Steps placements jointly with Pathway Care. Sharon has twenty years experience of working in the Care Sector. She began her career working with children in a Family Resource Centre. She completed an advanced GNVQ in Health and Social Care with a distinction in 1996. She subsequently completed the Institute of Leadership and Management NVQ Level. Sharon has been a Registered Manager since 2003, managing several Units for Marlowe (St. David's) as well as Impact Youth Services. She has developed expertise in managing difficult and challenging behaviour with both boys and girls, as well as having gained invaluable experience in managing children and young people through the transition between residential and foster care. She is a Certified Instructor for CPI in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
